Without Rohit Sharma, Rahul opened for India in the series opener against Australia, which was played at Optus Arena in Perth from November 22 to 25. The 32-year-old right-given hitter from Karnataka, who made his Test debut in December 2014, scored 26 runs in the main inning and pounded 77 runs in the second.

He added 201 runs for the principal wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second innings of the match, which India won by 295 runs inside four days.

Talking about Rahul's presentation in the principal Trial of the continuous series against Australia, Rohit said that he played splendidly and there's compelling reason need to change his situation.

"The manner in which KL batted, I was watching from home with the infant in my arms. He played splendidly, so there is compelling reason need to change now; the situation may be different later on — the manner in which KL bats in abroad, so he merits that spot as of now."

As per the Indian chief, Rahul's organization with Jaiswal was the justification behind India's huge win over the Loose Greens in the primary Test.

"The association with KL and Jaiswal presumably won us the Test match - I don't see we expected to change that - it was quite simple for me, for the group it checked out".

Rahul, who addressed the media on Wednesday, had said that he would have been happy with batting at any situation as he has long defeated the "psychological difficulties" of being a floater in the line-up.
